0:00welcome to the study works vocabulary development program we will be
0:04discussing 10 new words per unit and they'll be quite a few units each unit
0:10discussion will last about 13 minutes
0:13but before we discuss the words you'll have the opportunity to discover how
0:18many of the words you already know in each unit you will see a screen that
0:22looks like this
0:23but of course the words are much more sophisticated you should mentally try to
0:28pair the numbered word on the left with the correct definition on the right
0:33for example because the first word is cat
0:36you should place a number one inside of the box next to a furry animal known to
0:42say meow
0:43likewise number two should be placed in front of green material covering a lawn
0:50or park because that's the definition of grass do this for all 10 words you'll
0:56have about two minutes to prepare all ten words
0:59thank you and good luck
1:02instructions
1:06unit one
1:07hair the numbered word on the left with the correct definition on the right you
1:12will have approximately two minutes
2:34our first word
2:36is limited limited at first may confusion because it looks a little bit
2:41like the word limp
2:43although it's not related to the word limp as in you walk with a limp limp it
2:48comes from a Latin word limpness which meant clear or water like which was
2:53limpa in Latin and if you really want a word that similar to it you might have
2:59to be a little bit of a biologist or a doctor
3:02your lymph system you have lymph nodes in your body is full of this clear
3:06liquid and it's more related to that
3:10limpid is in the physical sense anything that's clear
3:15as in water water is limpid unclouded are clear
3:20it also has a metaphorical meaning if something is clear we saw I understand
3:25it's clear to me we mean it's easy to understand or just easy so limited has
3:29that sort of meaning also you see a lot of famous writers they like the word
3:35limpid for example
3:36charles dickens wrote her limpid blue eyes were fixed upon me her clear blue
3:42eyes and Mark Twain used it and Tom Sawyer's they were tumbling over each
3:47other in this shallow limpid water of the white sand bar so I mean it's
3:52something that writers use
3:54it's not something that's usually common speech that's why it's so easy to forget
3:59limpet is anything that's clear or make something easy
4:04therefore the correct choice was at the very bottom clear easily understood our
4:11second word was seminal and that goes from the Latin it was the latin word for
4:17a seed related to a seed or beginning you might hear it and
4:25science a lot of famous things the writings of ceramic Newton were some of
4:30the most seminal works and modern science means beginning the important to
4:36think about a seed is the beginning of something it's an important part of
4:40something
4:41it also has a metaphorical meaning meaning strongly influencing later
4:47developments
4:49so you hear something is seminal it's extremely important
4:54it's usually something at the beginning not necessarily the beginning but either
4:58of those were pretty well
5:00therefore if you look at the choices here
5:04the correct answer is the third from the bottom
5:07original or ground of breaking our third word was noice and believe it or not the
5:14word noisome comes from the word annoy there's a thing in language development
5:21you're probably not interested in it but it is sort of curious i think we develop
5:25new words by chopping off the beginning of old words
5:30this process is called a thesis for example we used to say and xscape goat
5:36now we say scapegoat we didn't like that sound and English originally we said
5:42avant-garde but now we say then guard
5:45you saw the development of the word especially to form sometimes we use the
5:51word especially even the word cute was originally from the word up cute
5:56we just cut off the very first syllable the apart over long periods of time this
6:01is how some boards developed you often hear in everyday English people sign you
6:07know instead of did you know that's happened all through english that's why
6:12when you see the word knife which is got a strange spelling
6:16well it comes from the original word knife which was pronounced good knife
6:21they cut that off course was a little bit awkward when we just keep that knife
6:25port on it that's why we still see these strange Spelling's in English because
6:30one time we actually pronounce them but through the process of cutting off the
6:34front of a word
6:37this is called a
6:38asus we change the language we don't say good knife anymore we say give me the
6:44knife thing so the original word was annoying we just cut off the on the on
6:49part got a boy
6:51so now something that's annoying or noise some is offense of disgusting
6:57sometimes it's a smell sometimes people think something that annoys some have
7:02something to deal with noise doesn't necessarily although a irritating noise
7:08could be annoying therefore it could be away some but in most senses of the word
7:13the word noisome just deals with anything that's annoying or irritating
7:20especially if it has something to do with a sense of smell I don't know where
7:24that came from but that's the origin of noisome and you should be able to
7:30remember that the correct word that goes along with that is the very top one foul
7:37offensive particularly to the sense of smell
7:40so let's go on to the next word purveyor the verb would be proved a somebody who
7:47pervaiz as a probe a or anything ends with an e or ER and so r is usually
7:54something to deal with a thing or person
7:57it comes from the French word which is indirectly related to the Latin for weed
8:04Gary provide we have the word provide that we get very closely to that
8:10so the purveyor of something is somebody who provides our supplies you hear the
8:17word a lot and
8:18restaurants or companies provider of fine wines purveyor of buying goods they
8:25supply the things I sort of remember it because the sort of like survey survey
8:29sort of you look at something purvey is something you supply something
8:34the correct joining us of that is the second one down from the top a person
8:39who provides for supplies
8:41malevolent this is an important one malevolent is from to latin words
8:47mal à now which meant bad and you get a lot of words with malin at mal content
8:54malicious malignant a malignant tumor is cancer that's growing it's a bad one
9:00so try to remember mouth means bad and the other part of that is the mole part
9:05roll again comes from the Latin meaning to wish our to want something
9:10it too is a very common route vol in time you see that it has something to do
9:16with wishing something hoping for something you have volition you have
9:20your wishes
9:21if something is voluntary you are wishing to join volunteers somebody who
9:27says yes I'll take that
9:29so volunteer of involuntary polish and always come from that root ball
9:35so we combine those two things now which is bad and Bolin's wish somebody who
9:41wishes bad on you is malevolent you sometimes hear that in contrast to the
9:47word benevolent that means somebody who wishes well on you been a means good but
9:52in this case we're studying the word malevolent you might hear in a sentence
9:56like this
9:57his failures made him 11 elect toward those who were successful
10:02if you want to join that up the number five the five should be the fourth one
10:06down having intent to harm others
10:09the next word captivate i think is the easiest one on this list
10:14it obviously comes from something similar to capture and it really does
10:19the Latin captive these to us was a word that meant to take captive to capture
10:25somebody but it's some plants use and
10:27more of a metaphorical sense it we don't really use it anymore to mean that you
10:34kidnap somebody actually captured them that's sort of an obsolete
10:38meaning when we say we were captivated by something that generally means that
10:42we're enthralled were really sort of held emotionally imprisoned for example
10:48the beauty of the Grand Canyon captivated us
10:52it's a fairly simple 1 i'll leave it at that
10:55it's not too difficult so the word that captivate should be paired up with the
11:00third one down to hold the interest of to gain the attention of the next word
11:05is a little bit more complicated munificence this comes from latin word
11:10that meant generosity and we sort of have that same meaning today the root
11:17moon mu n is still used quite commonly in a lot of words that we have today
11:24community is a place where people share things communion is sort of a religious
11:30service where people share their thoughts with God
11:34you can use it in a non religious sense also communications when you share ideas
11:38with other people
11:40you get a lot of other words , munition municipality excommunication numerate
11:46come in so immune means to give generally it means to give in a very
11:52generous way a very very nice way
11:55so number 7 munificence should be paired up with the halfway point characterized
12:02by great generosity our shortest word is them
12:07it's short but a lot of people don't know it so we'll talk about it
12:11it's an interesting word because this one of the few words it's purely an
12:15Americanism it comes from the Latin nice which meant powerful and we use that in
12:21that sense them sounds like an American thing doesn't somebody with them usually
12:27has energy a lot of spirit a lot of enthusiasm for example every country
12:33feels that it does somethings better than others and defend such national
12:37strength with special
12:39you often hear the word them paired up with the word them and bigger
12:44I don't know why that is them and kept them and energy the correct pairing up
12:50with the number eight should go to the second from the bottom energy or bigger
12:55the next one I think is fairly simple even though you've never never seen it
13:00partisan is clearly has something to do with the word part
13:06it's usually a supporter or a person of a group and the origin should be fairly
13:10obvious you might hero phrase such as the French partisans were effective in
13:17destroying Nazi supply lines during World War two
13:21that's being used in a war political context right now in our country were
13:26said to be very partisans think about it we have different parties that makes us
13:31partisan some of us or partisans of the Republicans some of the sort of
13:37partisans of the Democrats some of the sort of nonpartisan may be independent
13:42so that's fairly simple
13:44so number nine should go toward the middle and adherent or supporter of a
13:49person group or party and our final one is abducted extremely important
13:56it's comes from to latin roots
14:01well actually one's a prefix the purses AB AB is very important that always
14:05means away from and you get it in a lot of words i will eventually be discussing
14:10a base a bait abbreviated aberration and poor abide object
14:17abort the bridge abrogate abscond support always means away from something
14:23the route that's in that duct means to lead you get it
14:28a conductor of an orchestra leads the orchestra to conduct electricity is to
14:33lead it and when way reduction is to reduce the lead while production
14:38induction and air duct was an air duct does it leads air so if you put those
14:44two together to lead away me
14:48and to abduct and in this particular case number 10 should be paired up with
14:54the word to kidnapped you have duck somebody you kidnap them so that's our
14:59first set will start next set in just a second
