0:05a lot of people have hobbies hobbies are interesting things that people like to

0:12my father has a hot
0:13p he has a model railroad set that he put together a tiny electric train runs
0:19through make-believe villages and travels through tunnels and over
0:22mountains
0:23my father also enjoy sailing he has a real sailboat that he takes us out on
0:29he is teaching me how to sail I like to collect things I collect comic books
0:35stamps and coins
0:36I trade comic books with some of my friends and sometimes i buy comic books
0:41at stores some of the very old comic books are worth a lot of money i have
0:46stamps from all over the world
0:48whenever any of my friends get a letter from a faraway place they save the
0:53stamps for me i have stamps from England Japan Australia and even Russia
0:59I use a magnifying glass to look at the stamps and I keep them in a special
1:03album
1:04I don't have too many coins yet but I have a very old i'm from canada and i
1:08have a coin with a hole in it from Africa
1:11my mother used to collect dolls when she was a little girl
1:14the dolls were costumes from different countries my friend jon's hobby is
1:19painting he does oil painting he has even sold some of his paintings
1:24he is a good artist my friend Linda so's she has made clothes for herself and
1:29some of her friends maybe Linda will be a fashion designer when she gets older
1:34sometimes people's hobbies lead them into their careers
1:45Christmas
1:47in December christmas comes we get a holiday from school and our parents get
1:53a few days off from work
1:54our family gets ready for christmas by decorating the house we decorate it
1:59inside and errands on the outside of the house
2:03we put up lights that twinkle and glow we have a wooden Santa Claus and a
2:07reindeer set that my father puts up on the roof
2:10inside we put up a Christmas tree some years we have a real tree real pine
2:16trees smell nice
2:18but you have to be careful that they don't dry out and start a fire
2:22this year we have an artificial tree we hang tinsel and ornaments on the tree
2:27we also hanging strands of light on the tree and put a star at the top
2:32everyone thinks that the tree is beautiful when we turn on the lights
2:36we place gifts under the tree there is a gift for me under the tree
2:40it is wrapped in red paper and it has a big green bow on it red and green are
2:45the Christmas colors on Christmas Eve
2:48my brother and sister and I will hang our stockings near the fireplace Santa
2:53Claus comes down the chimney and fills our stockings full of toys and goodies
2:57on Christmas morning
2:59it is exciting to see what Santa has left for you
3:02my mother will make a big turkey dinner for us on Christmas Day
3:06we have lots of vegetables and good tasting foods to go with the turkey
3:10we will have dessert to some of my family like Christmas pudding but i will
3:16just have ice cream last year some carolers came to the door
3:20it was snowing outside they stood in the snow and saying Christmas carols to us
3:25my father gave them some money and my mother gave them some hot chocolate to
3:29warm them up they had lovely voices and they saying some of my favorite carols
3:34we also collect food gifts and money for some of the people in town who cannot
3:40afford to have Christmas
3:41my family is collecting things for a poor family who live near here
3:45we had fun deciding which toys to buy for the children in that family
3:50it was a good feeling to share with people who do not have as much as you do
3:54my parents have always taught us that christmas is a time for giving not
3:59receiving I think that

4:07the garden
4:10the garden is very interesting
4:13I sometimes go outside and i watch all the things that go on in the garden
4:20it smells wonderful in the flower garden
4:24there are red white pink and yellow roses that have a sweet smell
4:30i watch the bees as they take pollen from the roses
4:35there are tiny bugs that live on the rose bushes
4:40my mother tries to get rid of the little bugs but it is difficult to get rid of
4:45them
4:46she is glad to see the red lady bugs who eat the little bugs the birds like the
4:54sunflowers
4:55they like to eat sunflower seeds there is a bird bath in the garden
5:01the Blackbirds and swallows go in there to take a drink or have a bath
5:07I sometimes see a Robin or a blue jay in there too
5:11in the dirt there are little holes where the ants go in and out
5:19the ants are hard workers i watch them as they work together as a team to bring
5:26food to their nests there are snails in the garden -
5:31they carry their homes on their backs they move slowly and leave a silvery
5:37trail as they go they eat the leaves from my mother's plants
5:43my mother also has vegetables growing in her garden
5:48she grows green peas we like to pick those and eat the peas raw right out of
5:55their pods
5:56she grows lettuce and tomatoes -
6:00we have so many tomatoes that we always give some to our neighbors
6:05my mother sends us outside to pick lettuce and tomatoes
6:10whenever we have a salad my favorite vegetables are carrots their tops grow
6:17above the earth
6:19but the carrots are below the dirt when you pick them you have to pull the
6:24carrots out from under the soil weeds also grow in the garden after a good
6:32rain fall
6:33it seems that the weeds just spring up
6:36I pull the weeds out by their roots so they won't grow back
6:41weeds choke the good plants so we don't want them in our garden
6:46gardening is a good hobby you get fresh air sunshine and exercise you even get
6:54beautiful colorful flowers and nice fresh food
7:14the pet store
7:16on Saturday my parents took us to the pet store
7:20they had everything that you would need if you had a pet
7:25they had dog food collars and leashes for dogs they had treats to give your
7:32dog and brushes to brush your dog for cats they had food toys and litter boxes
7:40for birds they had seed and cages
7:45there was a section for fish they had fish in big tanks and little bowls in
7:53the big tanks
7:54there were colorful fish swimming around the girl who worked there said that they
8:00were tropical fish there were gold fish in the smaller fish bowls
8:06I saw the girl get a goldfish out with a little net
8:10she sold it to a boy who said he had another goldfish at home there was a
8:17very large cage with a parrot in it
8:20I walked up to the cage and the parents said hello
8:24I was surprised that the parrot could talk
8:28it could say a few things it said I love you
8:33pretty bird and bye bye I told my mother that I would like a parrot
8:39but she said that parents need a lot of care and attention at the back of the
8:46store
8:47there were some puppies they seemed glad to see me
8:50I stuck my hand into the cage and one of them licked my hand
8:56they were very lively they were running around and chasing their own tails in
9:03the next cage
9:04there were two kittens one of them was playing with a toy and the other one was
9:10asleep
9:11the kittens were very small the one that was sleeping was curled up into a ball
9:18I couldn't even see her face
9:21I didn't want to leave the pet store I was wishing that I could take all of the
9:26animals home with me
9:38my first day of school
9:41I remember my first day of school
9:44I was excited but I was afraid I held my mother's hand as we walk to the school
9:51when we got near the school
9:54I wouldn't let her hold my hand anymore I didn't want to look like a baby
9:59we got to the school the school looked very big and frightening
10:05there were children outside on the playground
10:08they all looked very big I looked at them and some of them looked at me I
10:15felt very small
10:17my mother and I went into the school and found the kindergarten room
10:23there were children in their most of them were the same size as me
10:28my mother spoke to the kindergarten teacher the teacher was very nice
10:34she said my name and she introduced me to some of the other children
10:39I already knew some of the children because they lived near me
10:45I began to play with some of the things that were in the classroom
10:49there were tight rucks coloring books and even a dull house
10:54I soon forgot to be scared and I began to play with the other children
11:00I didn't even notice that my mother had left the room
11:04in school we sang songs played some games and listened as the teacher read
11:10us a story
11:12I had a lot of fun on my first day of school
11:15I even drew a picture of my teacher
11:19I took the picture home and my mother put it on the refrigerator
11:24I like school it is a good place to meet new friends and learn all about the
11:31world
11:42transportation
11:46people move from place to place there are lots of ways you can move around
11:51from one place to another
11:54sometimes you can just move your feet and walk walking is good for you
12:00some places are too far to walk to you might have to ride a bicycle or ride on
12:07a skateboard
12:09some places are too far away to ride your bicycle to you might have to drive
12:15in a car or a van or even a truck
12:20my father has a car my uncle has a van
12:25I have never been in a big truck trucks are usually used to carry big loads from
12:33one city to another
12:35I would like to be a truck driver
12:38I would travel all over and sit high up in the cab
12:43I have been in a taxicab
12:46once my mother and i took a taxi to the hospital
12:51there was a special meter in the taxi when we finished our taxi ride the
12:57driver looked at the meter to find out how much money we owed him
13:02I once rode a horse i sat in the saddle and held on tight to the reins the horse
13:10ran very fast
13:12it was a bumpy ride and I was afraid that I would fall off the horse
13:17not too many people around here use horses for transportation
13:22they used to use horses for transportation in the old days if you
13:29want to travel very far away
13:31you have to go on a train a plane or a boat
13:36if you are in a hurry it is best to take a plane planes fly through the air
13:42very fast trains go along the tracks
13:47sometimes I can hear the train whistle from my house boats take a long time to
13:54cross the ocean
13:55great big boats that cross the oceans are called ships
14:00if you like to take it easy and look out at the water than ships are a good way
14:07to travel
14:08they say that the world is a lot smaller now because of Transportation people can
14:15travel to all parts of the world quickly and easily
14:20the world is not really smaller but it has become easy to get to faraway places
14:41television
14:44do you watch television my mother says that i watch too much television
14:50i watch cartoons on saturday mornings
14:53cartoons make me laugh my brother and I each have our favorite cartoons
15:00we have trouble deciding which cartoons we will watch on Saturday afternoons we
15:07like to watch sports
15:09my brother really likes to watch baseball but usually my mother tells us
15:14to go out and play on a Saturday afternoon on weeknights
15:20we have our own favorite shows I like shows about outer space and monsters
15:27my brother likes comedies he likes to laugh my mother like shows about real
15:34life situations
15:36she likes to watch the news she says that the news is important
15:42she watches the news and weather to find out what is going on in the world
15:48sometimes she watches real-life shows about doctors or policemen
15:53my father doesn't watch television
15:56he says that he would rather read a good book or the newspaper
16:02my dad gets all his news from the newspaper
16:06my favorite thing is to sit in front of the television with a bag of popcorn and
16:13a bottle of pop I sit there and change the channels with the remote control
16:19I change channels and watch a few different shows at once
16:23my mother won't let me watch too much television
16:27she doesn't want me to get lazy television is good if you don't spend
16:33too much time watching it you can learn a lot from television
16:38if you watch the educational channels I learned about dinosaurs and rainforest
16:44last week
16:45just from watching television
17:00my country
17:03i live in canada it is a very large country that is made up of ten provinces
17:09and three territories
17:12most of the provinces and territories are quite unique for example in
17:18Saskatchewan
17:19the land is flat and it is not surrounded by water
17:23they grow wheat in Saskatchewan British Columbia has mountains
17:29I have never been to British Columbia but I hear that it is very beautiful
17:35nova scotia is on the Atlantic Ocean
17:39so there are many fishermen out there the people in the provinces are even
17:44different from each other in Quebec many of the people speak french in the
17:50Maritime Provinces the people like to play their own kind of music they play
17:56fiddles and accordions and many of them dance very well known of it is in the
18:03north
18:04so life is quite different they're the people who live in the new territory of
18:09Nunavut are very close to wildlife
18:13they do a lot of hunting and fishing it can get very cold up in the Arctic where
18:20none of it is i live in ontario even within Ontario life can be quite
18:28different
18:29the capital of ontario is toronto toronto is a very busy city with lots of
18:36apartments offices and shops
18:39toronto is an exciting place and it has a lot to offer
18:44there are theaters and restaurants to suit every taste the culture in toronto
18:50is very diverse
18:52if you drive a few miles north of Toronto you will find places that are
18:57tranquil and peaceful many people leave Toronto on the weekends and drive to
19:04their cottages where they find rest and relaxation
19:09canada is made up of many different cultures
19:13people of many different ethnic backgrounds live in harmony in Canada
19:19that is why i like Canada in Canada we celebrate our differences
19:34food
19:38what kind of food do you like to eat
19:41I am lucky because in Canada there are many foods to choose from
19:47I like to eat hot dogs hamburgers & steak
19:51these are all meat products i also like cheese ice cream and yogurt these are
20:00all dairy products
20:02I like vegetables my favorite vegetables are broccoli cabbage carrots and peas
20:10I eat a lot of fruit I eat which ever fruit is in season in strawberry season
20:19I eat a lot of strawberries in peach season
20:22I eat many peaches sometimes my mother will make a peach pie many different
20:30crops grow in canada we have many orchards and farms fresh fruit and
20:36vegetables are plentiful in Canada meat and fish are also plentiful here in
20:43canada we have a lot of different foods to choose from in my city there are a
20:49lot of Italian restaurants
20:52my favorite food at the italian restaurant is pizza
20:57my parents would rather have spaghetti or lasagna
21:01there are Greek restaurants mexican restaurants and chinese restaurants in
21:08fact there are restaurants from most cultures
21:11I can go around from restaurant to restaurant and pretend that I am
21:17traveling the world and trying all the different foods from around the world
21:22sometimes I eat things that aren't good for me
21:25I eat potato chips and candies these foods aren't part of a nutritious diet
21:31but they are fun to eat
21:46the zoo
21:48my class took a trip to the Toronto Zoo
21:52I
21:52I had a wonderful time they're my favorite animals were the Lions
21:57they look very powerful and strong
22:01they say that the lion is the king of the forest and I think that title suits
22:07him
22:08the monkeys were funny they were looking at us just as much as we looked at them
22:14they were swinging from branches and doing tricks to impress us
22:19there was a baby monkey that was clinging to its mother's back
22:24it was very cute the Tigers were pacing back and forth
22:30they seemed Restless the stripes on a tiger are very beautiful
22:36we watched the toll giraffes as they nibbled leaves off the tallest trees
22:42we spoke to a colorful parrot that spoke back to us we saw exotic animals that we
22:49had never seen before
22:51some of them were very strange there were different types of bears they're
22:56there were black bears
22:58I saw a black bear once when I was camping up north we saw polar bears
23:04polar bears are white they like the cold
23:09we even saw panda bears one of my friends bought a toy panda bear from the
23:15gift shop because she thought that the pandas were so cute
23:19we saw slippery snakes some of the snakes had very bright skins
23:25most of the girls were afraid of the snakes the zookeeper was looking after
23:31the snakes and one of them hissed at him he has to be very careful when he works
23:37with the snakes
23:38the last thing that we saw at the zoo was the elephant
23:43he was enormous he looked at us
23:47then he raised his trunk and made a loud sound it made us jump
24:03the museum
24:06the museum was very interesting there were so many things in the museum that I
24:13would need more time to really see everything
24:16there were clothes from the past I don't know how people wore some of those
24:22things they look like they would be uncomfortable
24:26I like to wear my jeans
24:29there were things from Wars there were bullets and cannons and even uniforms
24:35from the soldiers
24:37I don't think that war is a good thing but it is good to remember the past and
24:43honor the people who died for your country
24:46there was an old fire truck at the Museum this fire truck was pulled by a
24:52horse
24:53there were some very old photographs of the firemen putting out fires
24:58there were rooms in the museum that were set up like an old house
25:03there were antique irons and sewing machines
25:08the women used to clean the clothes with a washboard
25:12there were no modern appliances back then
25:16I'm glad that we have electricity and modern appliances the things that we
25:22have make life so much easier
25:25there were mummies from Egypt at the Museum
25:29I was fascinated by those there were artifacts from the Indians
25:35there were arrowheads and cradles that the babies slept in
25:40I tried my best to see everything but it was almost impossible
25:46the museum is a good place to learn about your past
25:50I tried to imagine my grandparents using some of the things that were on display
25:55at the Museum
26:09the police
26:13my mother always told me that if I was lost I could go up to a policeman and
26:19that he would help me to find my way home I never did get lost
26:25but I always remembered what my mother told me about the police
26:29I think policeman look very nice in their uniforms
26:34I see police officers drive by in their police cars in my town
26:40we even have police officers on bicycles policeman and police women have a job
26:48that can sometimes be dangerous
26:51they have to catch people who break the law
26:54sometimes they have to chase people or try to calm people down to be a police
27:01officer
27:02you need a lot of training it's important to be able to deal with people
27:08effectively a police officer came to our school
27:12he had a police dog with him
27:15the officer showed us how the dog could track down criminals
27:20the dog was very smart he could even find things that were hidden
27:26criminals sometimes hide things that they don't want the police to find the
27:32policeman told us that he and his dog were partners
27:36his dog lives at his house with the policeman and his family
27:42sometimes I see police cars on the side of the road
27:47the police stopped at people who are speeding or are not wearing their
27:52seatbelts
27:53the police officers warn people or give out tickets
27:58sometimes they even have to arrest people
28:02police officers are just doing their job when they arrest people some people need
28:09to be arrested and put in jail to make it safer for the rest of us
28:23pretending
28:26I like to pretend i like to make up things that aren't real
28:30I use my imagination I was pretending that i was in a time machine
28:34I set the date for a prehistoric time I turned on the time machine and it buzzed
28:39in Word and spud madly when it stopped spinning i opened the door and stepped
28:43out into a very thick jungle
28:46I listened carefully to the sounds of the jungle I could hear strange animal
28:50noises and the leaves were rustling I wasn't sure if I'd gone back in time or
28:54just landed in a jungle somewhere in the 21st century
28:58it didn't take me long to realize that I had indeed gone back in time a very
29:03strange bird-like creature with a large beak flew overhead
29:07I've never seen anything like it in my life I took a few steps out into the
29:11long grass and ferns
29:13I didn't want to go too far away from my time machine
29:17I heard a noise over on my right side there was a man who looked quite
29:21different from me
29:22he was dressed in an animal skin and he carried a big stick
29:25I didn't want him to see me so I hid behind a tree
29:29he didn't speak any language that i could understand he grunted at someone
29:33who must have been in the distance
29:35then I felt the earth shake beneath my feet
29:38I heard giant thumps on the ground as the floor of the jungle shook the man
29:42and the animal skin began to run
29:44I saw why he was running a giant dinosaur appeared above the tops of the
29:49trees
29:50it was bigger than anything I'd ever seen my heart began to pound my chest it
29:54was coming toward me
29:56I ran toward my time machine and jumped in I set the dial for the 21st century
30:00the Machine word and buzzed my time machine landed in the 21st century
30:05I got away just in time
30:17a baby
30:19my and just had a baby girl
30:21we went to the hospital to visit my end and to see the new baby
30:25my aunt was feeling fine although she was just a bit tired
30:29she walked with us to a big window that had lots of babies behind it
30:33she pointed to a crib with a baby in it the baby was wrapped in a pink blanket
30:38we all said how pretty the baby looked I couldn't believe how tiny the baby was
30:42she was asleep so we couldn't see her eyes when the baby went home
30:47we went to visit her we heard the baby she was crying
30:51my aunt said the baby was hungry my aunt had a baby bottle full of warm milk
30:56she fed the baby with it the baby was happy after that my and patted the baby
31:02on the back until the baby burp and then the baby fell asleep
31:06I held the baby I looked at her tiny fingers and tiny toes
31:11I was very careful with her she opened her eyes and looked at me
31:15I spoke to the baby but I knew that she could not understand me
31:19babies have to learn to walk and talk
31:22my aunt change the baby babies wear diapers so they need to be changed often
31:27the baby has a lot of toys but she is still too young to play with them by and
31:32says that it won't be long before the baby is crawling and trying to talk
31:36babies are cute I have seen pictures of myself when I was a baby and it's hard
31:42to believe that I was once that small
31:53a wedding
31:56the church bells are ringing I am inside the church waiting for my cousin to walk
32:01down the aisle
32:02today is her wedding day she has a bride the organist is playing a song on the
32:08organ
32:08we all stand up and watch my cousin walk down the aisle
32:12she is our man armed with her father she is dressed in a long white dress and
32:16veil
32:17she looks so beautiful she looks like a princess
32:21the man who she is going to marry is standing at the front of the church
32:25he is the groom he looks nice too he is wearing a suit and he has a flower in
32:31his lapel
32:32the minister says words to the couple which will make them man and wife
32:36the bride and groom smile at each other but they seem to be a little bit nervous
32:41they give each other gold rings - where to symbolize that they are married they
32:46kiss each other and walk out of the church as the organist plays joyous
32:50music
32:51some of the people in the church cried at the wedding but not because they were
32:55sad
32:56everyone in the church is very happy for the couple a photographer takes pictures
33:01of the happy couple
33:02we wish them well and look forward to the reception where we will have dinner
33:06and we will dance and have a good time until it is very late
33:10the bride will throw her bouquet of flowers and it is said whoever catches
33:15the bouquet will be the next bride
33:17the next day the bride and groom will leave for their honeymoon
33:21my cousin and her husband are going to Mexico for their honeymoon
33:35my dad
33:37my dad is the man whom I respect the most in my life
33:41he works very hard to make the money that supports us
33:44my mother has a job too and she also works very hard
33:48my dad is the principal of a high school he works at the school all day and often
33:54has to go to meetings at night
33:56he deals with parents students and staff there was always something that he has
34:00to deal with
34:01he has a lot on his mind it doesn't matter how much work my dad has to do he
34:07always has time for my brother's my sister and me if I go to him with a
34:12problem
34:13you will sit down and discuss it with me he doesn't yell
34:16he is always very logical and he tries to think of the best way to deal with
34:20things
34:21my dad is a very patient man once I spilled some ink on papers that he was
34:26working on
34:27I thought he would be mad but he didn't get angry he said it was ok he takes
34:33time out to do things with us
34:35he has taken my brother's fishing he takes me to the arena to skate and he
34:40helps my sister to write your essays and assignments
34:43he always makes us laugh he makes us feel like we are very special to him he
34:48is a very good father and on father's day I always buy him a car that tells
34:52them just how much he means to me
34:54I think it is important to have good parents
34:58I hope that when I have children I will be a good parent like my parents are to
35:02me
35:03parents give children the foundation they need to live good lives
35:19my mother
35:21my mother does so many things she has a job at a dress store
35:25she cooks our meals she cleans the house she feeds the pets and she still finds
35:31time to spend with us
35:32my mother is always busy but she says that her favorite time is time that she
35:37spends with us
35:38my mother works from monday to friday when she comes home from work she makes
35:43something for supper
35:45we usually do the dishes so that she won't have to do them after supper she
35:49helps us with our homework or she sits down to watch television
35:53some nights she go shopping and she takes whoever wants to go with her
35:57mother's are a little bit of everything
36:01my mother is like a teacher when she helps us with our homework
36:04she is like a nurse when she looks after us all when were ill she is like a cook
36:09when she makes meals for us
36:11she says that cleaning the house is released favorite thing she says that
36:16the house gets dirty again right after you clean it
36:18she gets my father my brothers sister and me to help her with the cleaning my
36:24mother washes all our clothes and sometimes she irons them if they need it
36:28my mother says that there are not enough hours in a day
36:31we try to help my mother as much as we can there's a lot of work involved in
36:36keeping a home neat and organized
36:38most of my friends mother's work mothers are the people who you go to when you
36:43need to be comforted mothers are the people who could make you feel better
36:47i'm glad that i have the mother that I have my mother is caring and funny
36:52she has fun to be around
37:06a surprise
37:08last Friday my dad came home from work and said that he had a surprise for us
37:13we tried to guess what the surprise might be my brother gets that we were
37:17going out for dinner
37:19my dad said no my other brother asked if my father had tickets to a hockey game
37:24my dad said no my sister asked if we're going on a trip
37:29my dad said no my mother knew what the surprise was so she just stood and
37:34smiled at us
37:35I guess that we might be getting a swimming pool my dad said no we were
37:41getting very frustrated trying to guess what the surprise might be my brother
37:45asked how big the surprise was my dad said that the surprise was quite small
37:50we were not sure what the surprise could be well we all like it
37:55I ask yes my dad replied every one of you will love this surprise
38:00we heard a noise it was a crying noise your surprise wants to see you my dad
38:06said he opened the door to the bedroom and a tiny puppy came running out
38:11we were all very excited our surprise was a puppy
38:14it was a little baby spaniel the puppy loved all of us
38:18she ran around and let all of our faces we had always wanted a dog
38:23we take turns feeding the puppy and taking her out for walks
38:26she is growing quickly and will soon be an adult dog
38:30we all agree that the puppy was the nicest surprise my dad could have given
38:34us
38:45rhyming words
38:47sometimes my friends and I play a game it's something we made up so it doesn't
38:52have a name
38:53we like to take words that rhyme we put them together line by line
38:57do you get the picture now we're playing the game and this is how i might say I
39:03like to drive a car
39:05I really don't like to go very far if i decide to take a walk
39:09I'd go with a friend so that we could talk do you see that these lines rhyme
39:14play the game
39:15if you have the time we could talk about school or even playing
39:20do you know what i am saying rhyming words is easy to do
39:25it's fun for me it can be fun for you just join in and say something or make
39:30it into a song that you can sing
39:33there are so many words that rhyme with others like smile and mile and mothers
39:38and brothers
39:39I could spend all day just making up these things i could let my imagination
39:43fly on wings up to the clouds and back to my mind there are so many rhymes that
39:49i can find there are some words that are hard to find rhymes for I don't use
39:55those words anymore

40:19sometimes my teacher gives us homework I don't mind doing my homework
40:24except when the weather is really nice and all my friends are outside those
40:28nights I'd rather be outside with them so I try to get my homework done quickly

40:36we have been reading a book we have to read a chapter of the book and answer
40:40the questions at the end of the chapter
40:42it is an interesting book so the homework for this is quite easy
40:46my math homework is not so easy
40:49I have to do some addition and subtraction I don't mind that but there
40:54are some problems that need to be solved the problems involve addition
40:58subtraction and multiplication
41:01I am not too good with numbers I need to work harder on my math I just finished a
41:06project for history
41:08I had to make a map of canada with diagrams showing the roots of all the
41:12Explorers it was an interesting project because i have been to some of the
41:16places that the Explorers went to I don't have any science homework at
41:21school we are growing bean plants we go in every day and see how the plants have
41:26grown we write down all the changes that occur in the plant every day
41:30the only other homework that i have is geography
41:34I have a map of canada and i have to write the names of all the provinces and
41:38their capitals on it
41:40it won't take me long to do that because i know all the provinces with my
41:45homework is all done i will go inside and play ball with my friends until it's
41:49time to come in
41:50I am a good student I get good marks because I like school my favorite
41:55subjects are physical education
41:57english and history math is my least favorite subject but I'm trying to

1:04I don't have too many coins yet but I have a very old i'm from canada and i
1:08have a coin with a hole in it from Africa
1:11my mother used to collect dolls when she was a little girl
1:14the dolls were costumes from different countries my friend jon's hobby is
1:19painting he does oil painting he has even sold some of his paintings
1:24he is a good artist my friend Linda so's she has made clothes for herself and
1:29some of her friends maybe Linda will be a fashion designer when she gets older
1:34sometimes people's hobbies lead them into their careers
1:45Christmas
1:47in December christmas comes we get a holiday from school and our parents get
1:53a few days off from work
1:54our family gets ready for christmas by decorating the house we decorate it
1:59inside and errands on the outside of the house
2:03we put up lights that twinkle and glow we have a wooden Santa Claus and a
2:07reindeer set that my father puts up on the roof
2:10inside we put up a Christmas tree some years we have a real tree real pine
2:16trees smell nice
2:18but you have to be careful that they don't dry out and start a fire
2:22this year we have an artificial tree we hang tinsel and ornaments on the tree
2:27we also hanging strands of light on the tree and put a star at the top
2:32everyone thinks that the tree is beautiful when we turn on the lights
2:36we place gifts under the tree there is a gift for me under the tree
2:40it is wrapped in red paper and it has a big green bow on it red and green are
2:45the Christmas colors on Christmas Eve
2:48my brother and sister and I will hang our stockings near the fireplace Santa
2:53Claus comes down the chimney and fills our stockings full of toys and goodies
2:57on Christmas morning
2:59it is exciting to see what Santa has left for you
3:02my mother will make a big turkey dinner for us on Christmas Day
3:06we have lots of vegetables and good tasting foods to go with the turkey
3:10we will have dessert to some of my family like Christmas pudding but i will
3:16just have ice cream last year some carolers came to the door
3:20it was snowing outside they stood in the snow and saying Christmas carols to us
3:25my father gave them some money and my mother gave them some hot chocolate to
3:29warm them up they had lovely voices and they saying some of my favorite carols
3:34we also collect food gifts and money for some of the people in town who cannot
3:40afford to have Christmas
3:41my family is collecting things for a poor family who live near here
3:45we had fun deciding which toys to buy for the children in that family
3:50it was a good feeling to share with people who do not have as much as you do
3:54my parents have always taught us that christmas is a time for giving not

4:10the garden is very interesting
4:13I sometimes go outside and i watch all the things that go on in the garden
4:20it smells wonderful in the flower garden
4:24there are red white pink and yellow roses that have a sweet smell
4:30i watch the bees as they take pollen from the roses
4:35there are tiny bugs that live on the rose bushes
4:40my mother tries to get rid of the little bugs but it is difficult to get rid of
4:45them
4:46she is glad to see the red lady bugs who eat the little bugs the birds like the
4:54sunflowers
4:55they like to eat sunflower seeds there is a bird bath in the garden
5:01the Blackbirds and swallows go in there to take a drink or have a bath
5:07I sometimes see a Robin or a blue jay in there too
5:11in the dirt there are little holes where the ants go in and out
5:19the ants are hard workers i watch them as they work together as a team to bring
5:26food to their nests there are snails in the garden -
5:31they carry their homes on their backs they move slowly and leave a silvery
5:37trail as they go they eat the leaves from my mother's plants
5:43my mother also has vegetables growing in her garden
5:48she grows green peas we like to pick those and eat the peas raw right out of
5:55their pods
5:56she grows lettuce and tomatoes -
6:00we have so many tomatoes that we always give some to our neighbors
6:05my mother sends us outside to pick lettuce and tomatoes
6:10whenever we have a salad my favorite vegetables are carrots their tops grow
6:17above the earth
6:19but the carrots are below the dirt when you pick them you have to pull the
6:24carrots out from under the soil weeds also grow in the garden after a good
6:32rain fall
6:33it seems that the weeds just spring up
6:36I pull the weeds out by their roots so they won't grow back
6:41weeds choke the good plants so we don't want them in our garden
6:46gardening is a good hobby you get fresh air sunshine and exercise you even get
6:54beautiful colorful flowers and nice fresh food

7:16on Saturday my parents took us to the pet store
7:20they had everything that you would need if you had a pet
7:25they had dog food collars and leashes for dogs they had treats to give your
7:32dog and brushes to brush your dog for cats they had food toys and litter boxes
7:40for birds they had seed and cages
7:45there was a section for fish they had fish in big tanks and little bowls in
7:53the big tanks
7:54there were colorful fish swimming around the girl who worked there said that they
8:00were tropical fish there were gold fish in the smaller fish bowls
8:06I saw the girl get a goldfish out with a little net
8:10she sold it to a boy who said he had another goldfish at home there was a
8:17very large cage with a parrot in it
8:20I walked up to the cage and the parents said hello
8:24I was surprised that the parrot could talk
8:28it could say a few things it said I love you
8:33pretty bird and bye bye I told my mother that I would like a parrot
8:39but she said that parents need a lot of care and attention at the back of the
8:46store
8:47there were some puppies they seemed glad to see me
8:50I stuck my hand into the cage and one of them licked my hand
8:56they were very lively they were running around and chasing their own tails in
9:03the next cage
9:04there were two kittens one of them was playing with a toy and the other one was
9:10asleep
9:11the kittens were very small the one that was sleeping was curled up into a ball
9:18I couldn't even see her face
9:21I didn't want to leave the pet store I was wishing that I could take all of the

9:44I was excited but I was afraid I held my mother's hand as we walk to the school

9:54I wouldn't let her hold my hand anymore I didn't want to look like a baby

10:08they all looked very big I looked at them and some of them looked at me I

10:17my mother and I went into the school and found the kindergarten room
10:23there were children in their most of them were the same size as me
10:28my mother spoke to the kindergarten teacher the teacher was very nice
10:34she said my name and she introduced me to some of the other children
10:39I already knew some of the children because they lived near me
10:45I began to play with some of the things that were in the classroom
10:49there were tight rucks coloring books and even a dull house
10:54I soon forgot to be scared and I began to play with the other children
11:00I didn't even notice that my mother had left the room
11:04in school we sang songs played some games and listened as the teacher read

11:12I had a lot of fun on my first day of school

17:29I have never been to British Columbia but I hear that it is very beautiful

17:39so there are many fishermen out there the people in the provinces are even
17:44different from each other in Quebec many of the people speak french in the
17:50Maritime Provinces the people like to play their own kind of music they play
17:56fiddles and accordions and many of them dance very well known of it is in the
18:03north
18:04so life is quite different they're the people who live in the new territory of
18:09Nunavut are very close to wildlife
18:13they do a lot of hunting and fishing it can get very cold up in the Arctic where
18:20none of it is i live in ontario even within Ontario life can be quite
18:28different
18:29the capital of ontario is toronto toronto is a very busy city with lots of
18:36apartments offices and shops
18:39toronto is an exciting place and it has a lot to offer
18:44there are theaters and restaurants to suit every taste the culture in toronto
18:50is very diverse
18:52if you drive a few miles north of Toronto you will find places that are
18:57tranquil and peaceful many people leave Toronto on the weekends and drive to
19:04their cottages where they find rest and relaxation
19:09canada is made up of many different cultures
19:13people of many different ethnic backgrounds live in harmony in Canada
19:19that is why i like Canada in Canada we celebrate our differences

20:57my parents would rather have spaghetti or lasagna

21:11I can go around from restaurant to restaurant and pretend that I am
21:17traveling the world and trying all the different foods from around the world
21:22sometimes I eat things that aren't good for me
21:25I eat potato chips and candies these foods aren't part of a nutritious diet
21:31but they are fun to eat

21:48my class took a trip to the Toronto Zoo

21:52I had a wonderful time they're my favorite animals were the Lions
21:57they look very powerful and strong
22:01they say that the lion is the king of the forest and I think that title suits

22:08the monkeys were funny they were looking at us just as much as we looked at them
22:14they were swinging from branches and doing tricks to impress us
22:19there was a baby monkey that was clinging to its mother's back
22:24it was very cute the Tigers were pacing back and forth
22:30they seemed Restless the stripes on a tiger are very beautiful
22:36we watched the toll giraffes as they nibbled leaves off the tallest trees
22:42we spoke to a colorful parrot that spoke back to us we saw exotic animals that we
22:49had never seen before
22:51some of them were very strange there were different types of bears they're
22:56there were black bears
22:58I saw a black bear once when I was camping up north we saw polar bears
23:04polar bears are white they like the cold
23:09we even saw panda bears one of my friends bought a toy panda bear from the
23:15gift shop because she thought that the pandas were so cute
23:19we saw slippery snakes some of the snakes had very bright skins
23:25most of the girls were afraid of the snakes the zookeeper was looking after
23:31the snakes and one of them hissed at him he has to be very careful when he works
23:37with the snakes
23:38the last thing that we saw at the zoo was the elephant
23:43he was enormous he looked at us
23:47then he raised his trunk and made a loud sound it made us jump
24:03the museum
24:06the museum was very interesting there were so many things in the museum that I
24:13would need more time to really see everything
24:16there were clothes from the past I don't know how people wore some of those
24:22things they look like they would be uncomfortable
24:26I like to wear my jeans
24:29there were things from Wars there were bullets and cannons and even uniforms
24:35from the soldiers
24:37I don't think that war is a good thing but it is good to remember the past and
24:43honor the people who died for your country
24:46there was an old fire truck at the Museum this fire truck was pulled by a
24:52horse
24:53there were some very old photographs of the firemen putting out fires
24:58there were rooms in the museum that were set up like an old house
25:03there were antique irons and sewing machines
25:08the women used to clean the clothes with a washboard
25:12there were no modern appliances back then
25:16I'm glad that we have electricity and modern appliances the things that we
25:22have make life so much easier
25:25there were mummies from Egypt at the Museum
25:29I was fascinated by those there were artifacts from the Indians
25:35there were arrowheads and cradles that the babies slept in
25:40I tried my best to see everything but it was almost impossible
25:46the museum is a good place to learn about your past
25:50I tried to imagine my grandparents using some of the things that were on display
25:55at the Museum
26:09the police
26:13my mother always told me that if I was lost I could go up to a policeman and
26:19that he would help me to find my way home I never did get lost
26:25but I always remembered what my mother told me about the police
26:29I think policeman look very nice in their uniforms
26:34I see police officers drive by in their police cars in my town
26:40we even have police officers on bicycles policeman and police women have a job
26:48that can sometimes be dangerous
26:51they have to catch people who break the law
26:54sometimes they have to chase people or try to calm people down to be a police
27:01officer
27:02you need a lot of training it's important to be able to deal with people
27:08effectively a police officer came to our school
27:12he had a police dog with him
27:15the officer showed us how the dog could track down criminals
27:20the dog was very smart he could even find things that were hidden
27:26criminals sometimes hide things that they don't want the police to find the
27:32policeman told us that he and his dog were partners
27:36his dog lives at his house with the policeman and his family
27:42sometimes I see police cars on the side of the road
27:47the police stopped at people who are speeding or are not wearing their
27:52seatbelts
27:53the police officers warn people or give out tickets
27:58sometimes they even have to arrest people
28:02police officers are just doing their job when they arrest people some people need
28:09to be arrested and put in jail to make it safer for the rest of us

28:26I like to pretend i like to make up things that aren't real
28:30I use my imagination I was pretending that i was in a time machine
28:34I set the date for a prehistoric time I turned on the time machine and it buzzed
28:39in Word and spud madly when it stopped spinning i opened the door and stepped
28:43out into a very thick jungle
28:46I listened carefully to the sounds of the jungle I could hear strange animal
28:50noises and the leaves were rustling I wasn't sure if I'd gone back in time or
28:54just landed in a jungle somewhere in the 21st century
28:58it didn't take me long to realize that I had indeed gone back in time a very
29:03strange bird-like creature with a large beak flew overhead
29:07I've never seen anything like it in my life I took a few steps out into the
29:11long grass and ferns
29:13I didn't want to go too far away from my time machine
29:17I heard a noise over on my right side there was a man who looked quite
29:21different from me
29:22he was dressed in an animal skin and he carried a big stick
29:25I didn't want him to see me so I hid behind a tree
29:29he didn't speak any language that i could understand he grunted at someone
29:33who must have been in the distance
29:35then I felt the earth shake beneath my feet
29:38I heard giant thumps on the ground as the floor of the jungle shook the man
29:42and the animal skin began to run
29:44I saw why he was running a giant dinosaur appeared above the tops of the
29:49trees
29:50it was bigger than anything I'd ever seen my heart began to pound my chest it
29:54was coming toward me
29:56I ran toward my time machine and jumped in I set the dial for the 21st century
30:00the Machine word and buzzed my time machine landed in the 21st century
30:05I got away just in time

30:19my and just had a baby girl
30:21we went to the hospital to visit my end and to see the new baby
30:25my aunt was feeling fine although she was just a bit tired
30:29she walked with us to a big window that had lots of babies behind it
30:33she pointed to a crib with a baby in it the baby was wrapped in a pink blanket
30:38we all said how pretty the baby looked I couldn't believe how tiny the baby was
30:42she was asleep so we couldn't see her eyes when the baby went home
30:47we went to visit her we heard the baby she was crying
30:51my aunt said the baby was hungry my aunt had a baby bottle full of warm milk
30:56she fed the baby with it the baby was happy after that my and patted the baby
31:02on the back until the baby burp and then the baby fell asleep
31:06I held the baby I looked at her tiny fingers and tiny toes
31:11I was very careful with her she opened her eyes and looked at me
31:15I spoke to the baby but I knew that she could not understand me
31:19babies have to learn to walk and talk
31:22my aunt change the baby babies wear diapers so they need to be changed often
31:27the baby has a lot of toys but she is still too young to play with them by and
31:32says that it won't be long before the baby is crawling and trying to talk
31:36babies are cute I have seen pictures of myself when I was a baby and it's hard
31:42to believe that I was once that small
31:53a wedding
31:56the church bells are ringing I am inside the church waiting for my cousin to walk
32:01down the aisle
32:02today is her wedding day she has a bride the organist is playing a song on the
32:08organ
32:08we all stand up and watch my cousin walk down the aisle
32:12she is our man armed with her father she is dressed in a long white dress and
32:16veil
32:17she looks so beautiful she looks like a princess
32:21the man who she is going to marry is standing at the front of the church
32:25he is the groom he looks nice too he is wearing a suit and he has a flower in
32:31his lapel
32:32the minister says words to the couple which will make them man and wife
32:36the bride and groom smile at each other but they seem to be a little bit nervous
32:41they give each other gold rings - where to symbolize that they are married they
32:46kiss each other and walk out of the church as the organist plays joyous
32:50music
32:51some of the people in the church cried at the wedding but not because they were
32:55sad
32:56everyone in the church is very happy for the couple a photographer takes pictures
33:01of the happy couple
33:02we wish them well and look forward to the reception where we will have dinner
33:06and we will dance and have a good time until it is very late
33:10the bride will throw her bouquet of flowers and it is said whoever catches
33:15the bouquet will be the next bride
33:17the next day the bride and groom will leave for their honeymoon
33:21my cousin and her husband are going to Mexico for their honeymoon

33:37my dad is the man whom I respect the most in my life
33:41he works very hard to make the money that supports us
33:44my mother has a job too and she also works very hard
33:48my dad is the principal of a high school he works at the school all day and often
33:54has to go to meetings at night
33:56he deals with parents students and staff there was always something that he has
34:00to deal with
34:01he has a lot on his mind it doesn't matter how much work my dad has to do he
34:07always has time for my brother's my sister and me if I go to him with a
34:12problem
34:13you will sit down and discuss it with me he doesn't yell
34:16he is always very logical and he tries to think of the best way to deal with

34:21my dad is a very patient man once I spilled some ink on papers that he was
34:26working on
34:27I thought he would be mad but he didn't get angry he said it was ok he takes
34:33time out to do things with us
34:35he has taken my brother's fishing he takes me to the arena to skate and he
34:40helps my sister to write your essays and assignments
34:43he always makes us laugh he makes us feel like we are very special to him he
34:48is a very good father and on father's day I always buy him a car that tells
34:52them just how much he means to me
34:54I think it is important to have good parents
34:58I hope that when I have children I will be a good parent like my parents are to

35:03parents give children the foundation they need to live good lives

35:21my mother does so many things she has a job at a dress store
35:25she cooks our meals she cleans the house she feeds the pets and she still finds

35:45we usually do the dishes so that she won't have to do them after supper she

36:04she is like a nurse when she looks after us all when were ill she is like a cook

36:18she gets my father my brothers sister and me to help her with the cleaning my
36:24mother washes all our clothes and sometimes she irons them if they need it
36:28my mother says that there are not enough hours in a day
36:31we try to help my mother as much as we can there's a lot of work involved in
36:36keeping a home neat and organized
36:38most of my friends mother's work mothers are the people who you go to when you
36:43need to be comforted mothers are the people who could make you feel better
36:47i'm glad that i have the mother that I have my mother is caring and funny
36:52she has fun to be around
37:06a surprise
37:08last Friday my dad came home from work and said that he had a surprise for us
37:13we tried to guess what the surprise might be my brother gets that we were
37:17going out for dinner
37:19my dad said no my other brother asked if my father had tickets to a hockey game
37:24my dad said no my sister asked if we're going on a trip
37:29my dad said no my mother knew what the surprise was so she just stood and
37:34smiled at us
37:35I guess that we might be getting a swimming pool my dad said no we were
37:41getting very frustrated trying to guess what the surprise might be my brother

38:00we heard a noise it was a crying noise your surprise wants to see you my dad
38:06said he opened the door to the bedroom and a tiny puppy came running out
38:11we were all very excited our surprise was a puppy
38:14it was a little baby spaniel the puppy loved all of us
38:18she ran around and let all of our faces we had always wanted a dog
38:23we take turns feeding the puppy and taking her out for walks
38:26she is growing quickly and will soon be an adult dog
38:30we all agree that the puppy was the nicest surprise my dad could have given

38:45rhyming words
38:47sometimes my friends and I play a game it's something we made up so it doesn't
38:52have a name
38:53we like to take words that rhyme we put them together line by line
38:57do you get the picture now we're playing the game and this is how i might say I
39:03like to drive a car
39:05I really don't like to go very far if i decide to take a walk
39:09I'd go with a friend so that we could talk do you see that these lines rhyme
39:14play the game
39:15if you have the time we could talk about school or even playing
39:20do you know what i am saying rhyming words is easy to do
39:25it's fun for me it can be fun for you just join in and say something or make
39:30it into a song that you can sing
39:33there are so many words that rhyme with others like smile and mile and mothers
39:38and brothers
39:39I could spend all day just making up these things i could let my imagination
39:43fly on wings up to the clouds and back to my mind there are so many rhymes that
39:49i can find there are some words that are hard to find rhymes for I don't use
39:55those words anymore
39:56I like to choose words that are easy to rhyme like cat and bat or lime and time
40:03so give it a try I know you'll have fun I'll say goodbye my rhyming is done
40:17homework
40:19sometimes my teacher gives us homework I don't mind doing my homework
40:24except when the weather is really nice and all my friends are outside those
40:28nights I'd rather be outside with them so I try to get my homework done quickly
40:33tonight i have some english homework
40:36we have been reading a book we have to read a chapter of the book and answer
40:40the questions at the end of the chapter
40:42it is an interesting book so the homework for this is quite easy
40:46my math homework is not so easy
40:49I have to do some addition and subtraction I don't mind that but there
40:54are some problems that need to be solved the problems involve addition
40:58subtraction and multiplication
41:01I am not too good with numbers I need to work harder on my math I just finished a
41:06project for history
41:08I had to make a map of canada with diagrams showing the roots of all the
41:12Explorers it was an interesting project because i have been to some of the
41:16places that the Explorers went to I don't have any science homework at
41:21school we are growing bean plants we go in every day and see how the plants have
41:26grown we write down all the changes that occur in the plant every day
41:30the only other homework that i have is geography
41:34I have a map of canada and i have to write the names of all the provinces and
41:38their capitals on it
41:40it won't take me long to do that because i know all the provinces with my
41:45homework is all done i will go inside and play ball with my friends until it's
41:49time to come in
41:50I am a good student I get good marks because I like school my favorite
41:55subjects are physical education
41:57english and history math is my least favorite subject but I'm trying to
42:02improve my marks in that
