0:00Good morning, good afternoon, or even good evening, depending of course on what part
0:05of the big wide world you happen to be in right now. I am Julian, and this is Doing
0:12English. In today’s lesson, I am going to discuss one of your questions, How to respond
0:21quickly in English?
0:29I would say that this just comes down to practice, really. If you think about it, maybe when
0:39somebody asks you a question and you can’t answer quickly or automatically or you need
0:45to talk about something but it just doesn’t come as fast or as easily if you would like
0:52it to. If you think about it, that isn’t really something that is unique to speaking
1:01in a second language. For example, if somebody asks me – In English, if somebody asks me
1:08a question that is very difficult for me, it’s not easy to respond to that very quickly
1:15and automatically. I will have to think about it a little bit and maybe I won’t know the
1:22answer and I’ll ”Um” and “Ah, “Umm, “Uh” a lot and maybe I’ll get confused
1:29and I won’t be able to answer in a kind of smooth sort of way. And that might be the
1:36same for any kind of topic that I don’t talk about a lot. Whether that’s in my first
1:43language English or in my second language it doesn’t really matter. Maybe it’s more
1:51obvious when it’s in your second language and you’re more conscious of it. But I think
1:57it is something which happens in your first language too and I think practice is the key
2:03there.
2:04And again if you think about how you use your first language, there are probably some things
2:11that you talk about again and again and again and you can discuss very automatically and
2:18very smoothly. For example if somebody asked me a question about learning English, this
2:24is something that I talk about almost all day, every day. I am an English teacher so
2:28of course I do. So it’s very easy for me to respond very quickly and very smoothly
2:35to most questions. And try and think of something that you also talk about a lot and kind of
2:44conversations you may be having again and again and again and you’ll probably be able
2:48to speak about those very, very easily, very automatically, very smoothly because it’s
2:55something that you do again and again and again. It’s repetition that is the key I
3:00think. So when it comes to speaking English, the first thing you’ve got to do is understand
3:06that at first it’s not going to come out smoothly because repetition is the key. And
3:14presumably you will be having the same kinds of conversations again and again in English
3:19just like you do in your native language, so it will get easier overtime.
3:27But what you can also do is if you know you’re going to have to talk about some particular
3:33topic is just plan in your head and think about what you’re going to say in advance.
3:40And think about questions you will be asked and plan them in your head. And certainly,
3:47if for example like you’re giving like an academic preparation at your school or university
3:52or something you can kind of guess what the questions you’re going to be asked at and
3:57prepare for those. And if you do get a question that you’re not prepared for and you are
4:03unable to respond quickly and easily, don’t feel bad about it because again it’s something
4:09native speakers have a problem with too it’s just more obvious when you’re an English
4:15learner I think. So yeah, if you want to be able to speak and respond more automatically
4:24and more quickly, I think repetition is the key. Just don’t worry about it in the beginning
4:31and just you know as you have the same conversations again and again and again and answer the same
4:36questions again and again and again and it gets easy. Simple as that.

0:48you to feel better about your English and they're going to make
0:52your conversations smoother, faster and help
0:56you get rid of that hesitation that you feel when you're trying
1:00to think of what to say in conversation or
1:04maybe in a test or in your English class or at work.
1:08Ok so let me share these 3 strategies and some examples
1:12and how they can work for you. Ok so we have number one
1:16situations. So, I want you to think
1:20about common situations where you might use
1:24English. There are some common situations that everyone
1:28experiences. It could be, for example
1:32going to a cafe and ordering coffee
1:36it could be going to a restaurant. Maybe it's
1:40going to work and talking to your coworkers or
1:44as simple as greeting your office mates when you
1:48arrive at work. Maybe it's related to transportation if you take
1:52the train or the bus or you take a taxi or Uber
1:56or something like that. Each person will have slightly
2:00different common situations depending on your
2:04daily life, your regular activities, but think about
2:08what are the common situations where you're going to use
2:12English. So let me take the example of a coffee shop.
2:16I love coffee, as you can see I have my mug
2:20of coffee right here, my cup of coffee. And
2:24I also like to go out for coffee a lot. I think it's fun.
2:28When I go tot the cafe I can expect a specific
2:32usual common situation
2:36a common kind of script to happen.
2:40I get to the front of the
2:44line to the cashier or the barista
2:48as sometimes they're called in a cafe, the person who works
2:52there, who takes your order and makes your coffee, and
2:56they'll probably say, "Hello! Good morning!
3:00What can I get you?" Or "What can I get you?" If they're
3:04speaking in natural, fast English
3:08and I might say, could I have a
3:12small, black coffee?
3:16Hot. Please? If I'm feeling
3:20kind of talkative I could add to that. I could say, "How are you?"
3:24"How's your day?" But it's up to you, right?
3:28I'm just giving an example of a common script. What you can expect
3:32that person to say and then you
3:36have your common response. So if I know
3:40the barista is going to ask me, "What can I get you?" It's not going to
3:44shock me. I'm going to think, "Oh! What did they say?!"
3:48and hesitate to respond, "Oh! What do I say now?!"
3:52I'm going to be ready for that and I'm going to have my response
3:56ready. Just like that. It's easy when you have
4:00your expectations set
4:04and you've practiced in your mind for common situations.
4:08Next, let me talk about people.
4:12Other English speakers can give you a model
4:16for how to respond quickly. If you listen
4:20to native speakers having everyday conversations
4:24around you, you can pick up and
4:28copy some responses that you like. So listen
4:32for common responses. Maybe someone
4:36showing their interest. Maybe people often
4:40say, "Interesting!" or "Yeah!"
4:44or "Cool! Great!"
4:48You can listen to peoples' conversations and
4:52pick up the kind of phrases that you feel would work for you.
4:56And say them in your mind. It's just like copy and paste
5:00on the computer. Copy that word or that phrase so that you
5:04can use it later to respond to other people. You might
5:08also want to copy some ways that people show understanding
5:12like "Ok, got it." You can copy
5:16that and use that in your own conversations. So find
5:20English speakers that you can relate to. Maybe someone who has things in common
5:24with you, maybe same gender, same age
5:28same profession, same interest, it doesn't have to
5:32be somone exactly like you but sometimes it helps for you to be able to
5:36copy and paste those phrases if you feel something in common
5:40with that person whom you're copying.
5:44OK finally, tools. What do I mean by, "tools?" Well
5:48I want you to remember a few phrases
5:52or at least one phrase that will help you to buy
5:56time. If you're not sure what to say
6:00you don't have to just say something that comes out
6:04right away without meaning it. You can buy yourself some
6:08time while you think. For example, if you're in a conversation
6:12and you don't want to hesitate, you want to respond
6:16quickly, just say something like, "Let's see."
6:20Or "Let me think."
6:24Or if it makes sense, if someone asks you a question, you could say
6:28"Good question! Let me think." So you can add them
6:32together, right? Or, if you're in a conversation and someone is sharing their opinion
6:36you could say, "Good point! Hmm I think..."
6:40OK so these are some phrases that can help
6:44you to buy time and make it seem like you're speaking
6:48more quickly because you are joining the conversation, even though
6:52you're just buying time to think of something
6:56more interesting, more substantive to say.

0:00Good morning, good afternoon, or even good evening, depending of course on what part
0:05of the big wide world you happen to be in right now. I am Julian, and this is Doing
0:12English. In today’s lesson, I am going to discuss one of your questions, How to respond
0:21quickly in English?
0:29I would say that this just comes down to practice, really. If you think about it, maybe when
0:39somebody asks you a question and you can’t answer quickly or automatically or you need
0:45to talk about something but it just doesn’t come as fast or as easily if you would like
0:52it to. If you think about it, that isn’t really something that is unique to speaking
1:01in a second language. For example, if somebody asks me – In English, if somebody asks me
1:08a question that is very difficult for me, it’s not easy to respond to that very quickly
1:15and automatically. I will have to think about it a little bit and maybe I won’t know the
1:22answer and I’ll ”Um” and “Ah, “Umm, “Uh” a lot and maybe I’ll get confused
1:29and I won’t be able to answer in a kind of smooth sort of way. And that might be the
1:36same for any kind of topic that I don’t talk about a lot. Whether that’s in my first
1:43language English or in my second language it doesn’t really matter. Maybe it’s more
1:51obvious when it’s in your second language and you’re more conscious of it. But I think
1:57it is something which happens in your first language too and I think practice is the key
2:03there.
2:04And again if you think about how you use your first language, there are probably some things
2:11that you talk about again and again and again and you can discuss very automatically and
2:18very smoothly. For example if somebody asked me a question about learning English, this
2:24is something that I talk about almost all day, every day. I am an English teacher so
2:28of course I do. So it’s very easy for me to respond very quickly and very smoothly
2:35to most questions. And try and think of something that you also talk about a lot and kind of
2:44conversations you may be having again and again and again and you’ll probably be able
2:48to speak about those very, very easily, very automatically, very smoothly because it’s
2:55something that you do again and again and again. It’s repetition that is the key I
3:00think. So when it comes to speaking English, the first thing you’ve got to do is understand
3:06that at first it’s not going to come out smoothly because repetition is the key. And
3:14presumably you will be having the same kinds of conversations again and again in English
3:19just like you do in your native language, so it will get easier overtime.
3:27But what you can also do is if you know you’re going to have to talk about some particular
3:33topic is just plan in your head and think about what you’re going to say in advance.
3:40And think about questions you will be asked and plan them in your head. And certainly,
3:47if for example like you’re giving like an academic preparation at your school or university
3:52or something you can kind of guess what the questions you’re going to be asked at and
3:57prepare for those. And if you do get a question that you’re not prepared for and you are
4:03unable to respond quickly and easily, don’t feel bad about it because again it’s something
4:09native speakers have a problem with too it’s just more obvious when you’re an English
4:15learner I think. So yeah, if you want to be able to speak and respond more automatically
4:24and more quickly, I think repetition is the key. Just don’t worry about it in the beginning
4:31and just you know as you have the same conversations again and again and again and answer the same
4:36questions again and again and again and it gets easy. Simple as that.

0:48you to feel better about your English and they're going to make
0:52your conversations smoother, faster and help
0:56you get rid of that hesitation that you feel when you're trying
1:00to think of what to say in conversation or
1:04maybe in a test or in your English class or at work.
1:08Ok so let me share these 3 strategies and some examples
1:12and how they can work for you. Ok so we have number one
1:16situations. So, I want you to think
1:20about common situations where you might use
1:24English. There are some common situations that everyone
1:28experiences. It could be, for example
1:32going to a cafe and ordering coffee
1:36it could be going to a restaurant. Maybe it's
1:40going to work and talking to your coworkers or
1:44as simple as greeting your office mates when you
1:48arrive at work. Maybe it's related to transportation if you take
1:52the train or the bus or you take a taxi or Uber
1:56or something like that. Each person will have slightly
2:00different common situations depending on your
2:04daily life, your regular activities, but think about
2:08what are the common situations where you're going to use
2:12English. So let me take the example of a coffee shop.
2:16I love coffee, as you can see I have my mug
2:20of coffee right here, my cup of coffee. And
2:24I also like to go out for coffee a lot. I think it's fun.
2:28When I go tot the cafe I can expect a specific
2:32usual common situation
2:36a common kind of script to happen.
2:40I get to the front of the
2:44line to the cashier or the barista
2:48as sometimes they're called in a cafe, the person who works
2:52there, who takes your order and makes your coffee, and
2:56they'll probably say, "Hello! Good morning!
3:00What can I get you?" Or "What can I get you?" If they're
3:04speaking in natural, fast English
3:08and I might say, could I have a
3:12small, black coffee?
3:16Hot. Please? If I'm feeling
3:20kind of talkative I could add to that. I could say, "How are you?"
3:24"How's your day?" But it's up to you, right?
3:28I'm just giving an example of a common script. What you can expect
3:32that person to say and then you
3:36have your common response. So if I know
3:40the barista is going to ask me, "What can I get you?" It's not going to
3:44shock me. I'm going to think, "Oh! What did they say?!"
3:48and hesitate to respond, "Oh! What do I say now?!"
3:52I'm going to be ready for that and I'm going to have my response
3:56ready. Just like that. It's easy when you have
4:00your expectations set
4:04and you've practiced in your mind for common situations.
4:08Next, let me talk about people.
4:12Other English speakers can give you a model
4:16for how to respond quickly. If you listen
4:20to native speakers having everyday conversations
4:24around you, you can pick up and
4:28copy some responses that you like. So listen
4:32for common responses. Maybe someone
4:36showing their interest. Maybe people often
4:40say, "Interesting!" or "Yeah!"
4:44or "Cool! Great!"
4:48You can listen to peoples' conversations and
4:52pick up the kind of phrases that you feel would work for you.
4:56And say them in your mind. It's just like copy and paste
5:00on the computer. Copy that word or that phrase so that you
5:04can use it later to respond to other people. You might
5:08also want to copy some ways that people show understanding
5:12like "Ok, got it." You can copy
5:16that and use that in your own conversations. So find
5:20English speakers that you can relate to. Maybe someone who has things in common
5:24with you, maybe same gender, same age
5:28same profession, same interest, it doesn't have to
5:32be somone exactly like you but sometimes it helps for you to be able to
5:36copy and paste those phrases if you feel something in common
5:40with that person whom you're copying.
5:44OK finally, tools. What do I mean by, "tools?" Well
5:48I want you to remember a few phrases
5:52or at least one phrase that will help you to buy
5:56time. If you're not sure what to say
6:00you don't have to just say something that comes out
6:04right away without meaning it. You can buy yourself some
6:08time while you think. For example, if you're in a conversation
6:12and you don't want to hesitate, you want to respond
6:16quickly, just say something like, "Let's see."
6:20Or "Let me think."
6:24Or if it makes sense, if someone asks you a question, you could say
6:28"Good question! Let me think." So you can add them
6:32together, right? Or, if you're in a conversation and someone is sharing their opinion
6:36you could say, "Good point! Hmm I think..."
6:40OK so these are some phrases that can help
6:44you to buy time and make it seem like you're speaking
6:48more quickly because you are joining the conversation, even though
6:52you're just buying time to think of something
6:56more interesting, more substantive to say.
